Who is Queenyy?
Hip-Hop/R&B Artist and Songwriter based out of Ottawa, Canada. Born and raised in Canada’s capital but both parents were born in Italy.
This year I put out my first project in collaboration with an Ottawa producer chevdot and we are releasing a series of singles with visuals throughout 2019. I released my first single on ALL PLATFORMS Talking Sh*t back in February and second single Pretty Young Thing in May, also with visuals available on YouTube.
This has been an exciting year for me and I’m just getting started.
What’s the meaning of ‘Queenyy’?
It is actually a very funny story.
My recent music journey started 5 years ago. I neglected my musical talents for years with thoughts of it never being a serious thing or fully believing in myself. I was out in Switzerland picking grapes on a farm and after a couple bottles of wine, I touched the piano for the first time in years and started singing for my friends. Their jaws dropped to the ground when I played them a couple of songs I learned on the spot by ear. This made me realize that I did have a gift. When I returned to Canada after a year of traveling, I was inspired and started performing hip hop covers, which then lead into paid gigs and motivated me to start writing songs again.
The name that was given to me while I was performing strictly Notorious B.I.G covers was Young Yogurt (I know, I know), which then eventually turned into YY. When I made my social media handle I set it as queenyymusic (the double y standing for Young Yogurt). Naturally, when I started to gain new followers, they started calling me queenyy So I just went with it.
How did you discover music?
I have always had a passion and ear for music since birth. I started off like I would imagine any artist would – spending hours singing and dancing in the mirror (and yes, I do still start my day this way), and I learned how to play the piano by ear as a child.
By the time I was in high school I started choreographing dances which then lead to writing songs. At any opportunity possible, I would put together a set that included a choreographed dance with my peers and a showcase of songs that I had written against popular hip hop and R&B instrumentals. As I grew up in a time where there was no YouTube and living in a city like Ottawa, becoming an ‘artist’ as something more than a hobby was such a ‘pipe dream’.
Fast forward 10 years later, I got back into music after traveling and really accepting who I am. I am now taking music seriously and in the transition of doing this full-time.
What’s the music you grew up with?
I’ve always listened to a wide variety of genres but my favourite has always been Hip Hop and R&B. My biggest influences are TLC, Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, Lauren Hill, Notorious BIG, Amy Winehouse. And the list could go on. However, I would say those artists are my biggest inspiration.
What means, for you, to be an artist?
Being an artist to me is an expression of who I am organically that I can share with the world through sound and movement. Art is a beautiful language that everyone can connect to in their own way and it has helped me through the good and bad days in life, whether it was through the movement of dance to a sound, or a sound and words that came out authentically. As an artist I want to help people in the same way that other artists have helped me through music.
Your music is in collaboration with Chevdot, a producer, choreographer and songwriter: how did you meet each other and why did you decide to work together?
Chevdot and I connected at a beat battle in Ottawa late December 2017. I was looking for a producer to work with and he was looking for an artist. We shared the same interest and style in music and dance and after an initial meeting, we decided to start working together. After a year of creating, we picked our favourite songs and started putting out a collaborative project queenyy x chevdot where we release a series of singles with some visuals throughout 2019.
What’s your typical work process for a song?
I try to keep things organic as possible. Usually, I start by free styling melodic and lyrical ideas over a beat to catch an authentic vibe. I then structure it, and polish the lyrics. Once I’m satisfied with that, I then bring it to a proper studio and lay it out. My goal is to learn more about the production side of things so I can put together a simple idea for a beat, write over that and send it to a producer to spice it up.
How could you describe your music?
My lyrics are all based on real life experiences involving relationships with different types of people. They are relatable to any gender, as I’ve been on both sides of the fence. However, since I am a woman, you can expect more lyrics through a woman’s perspective in the future. I vibe with sound that falls anywhere between the spirit of heavy groove R&B hitters to modern day Hip hop and Afrobeat.
Your new song, Pretty Young Thing, is a very good R&B/Hip Hop song. How did you work on that song?
Pretty Young Thing started out as a slow jam. Chevdot played the beat during a session and I started free styling some melodic and lyrical ideas over it.
I finished writing the song and it organically turned out to be about the struggles of dating someone at a younger age and how you ignore the red flags in the beginning because they’re so pretty but in time their younger years start to play a factor which leads to complications.
Once the lyrics were done, we both agreed that something was missing. We then sped up the tempo and added some different sound and it started to come to life. We re-structured it and brought it to our engineer, Carde Blanche at Audio Valley Recording Studios in Ottawa.
Once it was recorded, we decided that we wanted to create visuals of us showcasing our passion for dance and music. We took our ideas to our videographer Flx Vsn based out of Toronto, and he took those ideas and brought them to life.
What are you working on at the moment?
Aside from putting out the queenyy x chevdot project proper, I am working towards my own project. I’m continuing to grow and learn by working with new producers and artists with a similar but different sound in different parts of the world.
So far this summer I’ve spent some time in LA, but now I’m in London and will be in Europe for the rest of the summer. Just feeling the vibes out here and connecting with other creates to see what comes up. I will also be in Italy this summer exploring my roots and meeting family I’ve never met yet!

We know you as a musician for now. Have you ever experienced anything different?
I have a big passion for travel and dance, which all ties into who I am as an artist, and why I chose to take music seriously. So if I’m not making or listening to music, I’m somewhere in the world exploring and dancing or looking at maps and watching dance videos.
Do you have any plans for the future?
Continue to grow and better my craft, put out more music, evolve in dance, travel the world and spread the good energy. This is just the beginning of my career as an artist, I’m excited for the journey to what’s next.

Follow your dreams! Seriously. When you think things get hard and you want to give up, just keep going. Sometimes you follow a journey that may not make sense at that time, but everything always makes sense in the end. Trust the process.

Chi è Queenyy?

Quest’anno ho pubblicato il mio primo progetto in collaborazione con un produttore di Ottawa chevdot. Come nasce il nome ‘Queenyy’?
In realtà è una storia molto divertente.
Il mio recente viaggio musicale è iniziato 5 anni fa. Ho trascurato i miei talenti musicali per anni pensando che non fosse mai una cosa seria o credessi pienamente in me stesso. Ero fuori in Svizzera a raccogliere l’uva e dopo un paio di bottiglie di vino ho toccato il pianoforte per la prima volta dopo anni e ho iniziato a cantare per i miei amici. Si sono stupiti quando ho suonato un paio di canzoni che ho imparato sul posto a orecchio. Questo mi ha fatto capire che avevo un dono. Quando sono tornata in Canada dopo un anno di viaggio, mi sentivo ispirato e ho iniziato a suonare cover hip hop, che mi hanno portato a concerti pagati e mi hanno motivato a ricominciare a scrivere canzoni.
Il nome che mi è stato dato mentre stavo eseguendo cover di Notorius B.I.G era Young Yogurt (lo so, lo so), che alla fine si è trasformato in YY. Quando ho aperto il mio social media, l’ho impostato come queenyymusic (yy che sta per Young Yogurt). Naturalmente, quando ho iniziato a guadagnare nuovi follower, hanno iniziato a chiamarmi Queenyy, quindi è andata per questo.
Come ti sei avvicinata alla musica?
Ho sempre avuto una passione e un orecchio per la musica. Ho iniziato come penso faccia qualsiasi artista: passando ore a cantare e ballare davanti allo specchio (e sì, inizio ancora la mia giornata in questo modo), e ho imparato a suonare il pianoforte a orecchio da bambina.
Quando ero al liceo ho iniziato a coreografare balli che poi mi hanno portato a scrivere canzoni. In ogni occasione possibile, mettevo insieme un set che includeva una danza coreografica con i miei coetanei e una vetrina di canzoni che avevo scritto contro hip hop e strumenti R&B popolari. Sono cresciuta in un’epoca in cui non esisteva YouTube e vivendo in una città come Ottawa, diventare un ‘artista’ come qualcosa di più di un hobby era un ‘sogno irrealizzabile’.
10 anni dopo, mi sono riaffacciata alla musica dopo aver viaggiato e accettato davvero chi sono. Ora sto prendendo sul serio la musica e sto cercando di farlo a tempo pieno.
Con quale musica sei cresciuta?
Ho sempre ascoltato molti generi, ma il mio preferito sono sempre stati l’Hip Hop e l’R&B. Le mie maggiori influenze sono TLC, Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, Lauren Hill, Notorious BIG, Amy Winehouse. E l’elenco potrebbe continuare. Tuttavia, direi che quegli artisti sono la mia più grande ispirazione.
Che significa, per te, essere un artista?
Essere artista per me significa essere l’espressione di ciò che sono organicamente che posso condividere con il mondo attraverso i suoni e il movimento. L’arte è un linguaggio meraviglioso a cui tutti possono connettersi a modo loro e mi ha aiutato nei giorni buoni e cattivi della vita, sia attraverso il movimento della danza verso un suono, sia un suono e parole emerse autenticamente. Come artista voglio aiutare le persone nello stesso modo in cui altri artisti mi hanno aiutato attraverso la musica.
La tua musica nasce in collaborazione con Chevdot, producer, scrittore e coreografo: come vi siete conosciuti e perché avete deciso di lavorare insieme?
Chevdot e io ci siamo conosciuti ad una battuta di battle a Ottawa alla fine di dicembre 2017. Stavo cercando un produttore con cui lavorare e lui stava cercando un artista. Abbiamo condiviso lo stesso interesse e lo stesso stile per la musica e la danza e dopo un incontro iniziale, abbiamo deciso di iniziare a lavorare insieme. Dopo un anno di creazione, abbiamo scelto le nostre canzoni preferite e abbiamo iniziato a pubblicare un progetto collaborativo queenyy x chevdot secondo cui rilasceremo una serie di singoli con alcuni visuals per tutto il 2019.
Qual è il processo di creazione di un tuo brano?
Cerco di mantenere le cose organiche il più possibile. Di solito inizio con uno stile libero di idee melodiche e liriche su un ritmo per catturare un’atmosfera autentica. Poi lo strutturo e lucido i testi. Una volta che sono soddisfatta, lo porto in uno studio adeguato e lo preparo. Il mio obiettivo è quello di imparare di più sul lato della produzione delle cose in modo da poter mettere insieme una semplice idea con un ritmo, scrivere su quello e inviarlo a un produttore per rendere più piccante.
Come descriveresti la tua musica?
I miei testi sono tutti basati su esperienze di vita reale che coinvolgono relazioni con diversi tipi di persone. Sono paragonabili a qualsiasi genere, dato che sono stato su entrambi i lati della recinzione. Tuttavia, dal momento che sono una donna, puoi aspettarti più testi dalla prospettiva di una donna in futuro. Vibes con un suono che si colloca ovunque tra lo spirito delle hit R&B e l’hip-hop moderno e Afrobeat.
Il tuo nuovo brano, Pretty Young Thing, è veramente un ottimo prodotto R&B/Hip Hop. Come nasce?
Pretty Young Thing è nata molto lentamente. Chevdot ha suonato il ritmo durante una session e io ho iniziato a disegnare liberamente alcune idee melodiche e liriche su di esso. Ho finito di scrivere la canzone trattando delle difficoltà di uscire con qualcuno in giovane età e su come si ignorano le bandiere rosse all’inizio perché sono così belle ma con il tempo i loro anni più giovani iniziano a giocare un fattore che porta a complicazioni.
Una volta terminati i testi, entrambi concordammo che mancava qualcosa. Abbiamo quindi accelerato il tempo e aggiunto un suono diverso e ha iniziato a prendere vita. Lo abbiamo ri-strutturato e portato al nostro ingegnere, Carde Blanche, presso gli Audio Valley Recording Studios di Ottawa. Una volta registrato, abbiamo deciso che volevamo creare immagini di noi che mostrassero la nostra passione per la danza e la musica. Abbiamo portato le nostre idee al nostro videografo Flx Vsn con sede a Toronto, che ha preso quelle idee e le ha portate alla vita.
A cosa stai lavorando in questo momento?
Oltre a presentare il progetto Queenyy x Chevdot, sto lavorando al mio progetto. Sto continuando a crescere e imparare lavorando con nuovi produttori e artisti con un suono simile ma diverso in diverse parti del mondo.
Finora quest’estate ho trascorso un po ‘di tempo a Los Angeles, ma ora sono a Londra e sarò in Europa per il resto dell’estate. Basta sentire le vibrazioni qui fuori e connettersi con gli altri per vedere cosa succede. Quest’estate sarò anche in Italia ad esplorare le mie radici e ad incontrare la famiglia che non ho mai incontrato!
Quindi, potrebbe esserci un progetto solista e alcune collaborazioni in futuro! Rimanete sintonizzati.
Per ora ti conosciamo come musicista. Hai avuto anche altre esperienze in altri settori?
Ho una grande passione per i viaggi e la danza, che si lega a chi sono come artista e perché ho scelto di prendere la musica sul serio. Quindi se non sto facendo o ascoltando musica, sto esplorando e ballando da qualche parte nel mondo o guardando mappe e guardando video di danza.
Hai dei progetti per il futuro?
Continuare a crescere e migliorare la mia arte, diffondere più musica, evolvere nella danza, viaggiare per il mondo e diffondere la buona energia. Questo è solo l’inizio della mia carriera di artista, sono entusiasta del viaggio verso il prossimo.
C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire ai nostri lettori?
Segui i tuoi sogni! Sul serio. Quando pensi che le cose si complichino e vuoi arrenderti, continua pure. A volte segui un viaggio che potrebbe non avere senso in quel momento, ma alla fine tutto ha sempre senso. Fidati del processo.
